Share a room and want decorating tips!?
I share a room with my sister, and I do NOT want girly colors, and I don't like gothic either. I like black and white with bright green or blue, but I don't know how to use all the 'oldish' furniture we have with the modern colors I like. Also, I don't want a room divider, because it makes the room feel smaller. My sister agrees with pretty much everything, but she needs somewhere to put all her junk that she takes into our room. Help, please!

You can do a duo of colors on the walls-- take your sister out and agree on two colors you both like that go well together... Room dividers would seperate the two of you too much I wouldnt suggest it. Being organized is the best way to do it! If you cant buy new furniture what about refurbishing the stuff you have now? Or painting it a differant color or staining to make it look new... Whatever you do, make it convient for both of you! Good Luck!
You can still make your room modern by using the "oldish" furniture that you already have. These pieces can be painted a glossy white and upholstered in your bright green or blue. You may even want to paint a small chair or table the green or blue. I'd keep all the large items white and use the colors as accents, that way your room will still feel open.
Here are some ideas:
take the old furniture you have and re-purpose it
if you can work a stapler....you can make it look great in no time
First things first.........you need to go to the fabric store and find some fabric that you like...dont be afraid of prints and textured fabric...........the store will have lots n lotsssss of selections....but here are some fabric choices that may work for you
~~~~~~~~~~~~Black and white fabrics~~~~~~~~
you could use black and white fabrics, for the window treatments, pillows, and accessories ......and use the blue/green for furniture.
If you really want to punch it up ....instead of black ( which i feel is overused in decor today).....choose chocolate brown ...which goes great with bright blues and greens
You could then go with sort of a natural theme such as a
Feng Shui design style. This would encorporate fun natural elements such as rocks ( river stones in a fun decorative dish) , water (small table top fountain), fire (candles )
Organizational Ideas:
With two of you in the same room, you will need a media center. A centralized calander ...with a bulletin board on one side and a dry erase board on the other to keep track of important events.....also a couple of trays to keep papers that belong to each of you so they dont get mixed up.
Consider buying plastic stacking drawers that will either go in the closet, or next to a bed....for organizing your sisters things. Also, the long flat under bed storage boxes are great for a wide variety of things.........such as shoes, extra clothes, personal items such as scrapbooks and keepsakes. ( they are also very easy to slide and move when cleaning )
Use color coded hangers in the closet to seperate your clothes. Your sister may have red hangers and yours are yellow ....this will minimize fighting over clothing. Also, inside the closet, the small plastic stacking shelves would be great to store panties, bras, and belts. The back of the door can have hooks that would be great for hanging up and storing tote bags with hair accessories and cosmetics.
Also, consider stacking hat boxes .....or decorate some cardboard boxes with fabric or do a collage on them from decorative paper ...............stack these high in a corner to store various items of any type or size.
Go to a discount store such as a Goodwill or Salvation Army, fleamarket, yardsale..........find some old lamps that are stainless steel frames with old shades on them..........spray paint shades to be the same color as your room colors................maybe poke holes in the shades so the light 'peeps' through the holes.......maybe even decorate the shades by gluing fake gems or glass beads on it.
For bedding, a solid color would be best ...to keep the room from looking to 'busy'. You will have quite a few belongings in the room....the key will be to keep it clean and organized so that you both dont become overwhelmed being in the room.
Hope this helped!
